About

About the Founder

From a young age, Julie C. Hancock knew she wanted a life surrounded by artists and their work. She eventually found her way into music promotion, working in Wisconsin, Boston, Orlando and Hollywood, working at the American Film Institute coordinating the annual film festival.

Julie received her bachelor’s degree at Suffolk University in Boston, MA, and then went on to attain her JD at Barry University School of Law in Orlando, FL. She earned a certificate in Entertainment Law from Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles, and studied international intellectual property law abroad in Dublin, Ireland.

Julie has spent 12 years in the entertainment industry, with 8 of that in entertainment law. Her law firm, Your Virtual Advocate, has helped numerous actors, directors, artists, musicians, and creative entrepreneurs secure U.S. visas, defend copyright and trademark infringement and much more. She takes pride in providing subscription-based general counsel services to creative professionals so that they can have the peace of mind to do their best work.

Supporting the arts has always been top of mind for Julie. She attends live shows frequently to support local artists and followed Warped Tour several years for 10-daystretches. She has volunteered on street teams for bands, worked merch tables and has dedicated her life to helping artists and musicians take ownership of their work and creativity.

Her work with social issues also fuels her passion, as she supports efforts to maintain and expand access to the ballot box. Julie is a regular volunteer for voter protection efforts since 2008, volunteered with voter-protection efforts in Wisconsin during the 2020 election, and was the liaison to Brown County for the general election. Julie also volunteered her time and expertise to lead the coordinated efforts of lawyers around the world to help those affected by the previous administration’s travel ban in 2017.

Julie is a member of the American Constitution Society (ACS) and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). She is licensed to practice law in the states of Wisconsin (2020) and Washington (2014).

Known for her transparency, honesty, compassion, and pursuit of social justice, she is also a passionate traveler and immerses herself in other cultures, meeting and discussing challenges faced by artists. She loves sampling local flavors and brews and has a soft spot for Guinness.

Julie’s virtual law practice almost exclusively handles matters that touch on Creative Entrepreneurs or the entertainment industry.

This runs the spectrum in providing legal services to employers and foreign nationals seeking to be employed in any number of ways in the U.S. (traditional employment, artists, musicians, filmmakers, cultural event performers, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and all scenarios in between), as well as proactively working with Creatives to reduce legal risks to their careers and creative assets.

Being intimately involved in the journey of the creators, innovators and entrepreneurs, Julie is well-versed in the complexities faced concerning digital content and the internet. She wants to make creative works more accessible while protecting artistic property and its revenue streams. She takes a collaborative approach to educate creatives and businesses on U.S. Copyright and Trademark protection for their works or brands when they partner with others or hire out design elements. The firm ensures clients understand these legal concepts and how they affect their business, while Your Virtual Advocate executes the legal work to protect the client.

I believe in equal access to justice and the legal system.

This is why I became an attorney.

This is a driving force behind my business model of limited scope legal representation and the virtual law firm.

These two factors allow reduced fees and less burdensome methods to meet with an attorney, resolve legal matters, or get the help needed in self-representation.

My professional background is comprised of over 20 years of legal, compliance, managerial,
project and client relationship management experience. This background includes
in-house and law firm experience handling civil litigation cases, negotiating
and drafting agreements, handling licensing, privacy and data security matters,
advising on customer complaints and fraud investigations, analyzing complex
research, providing risk assessments, and managing teams.

I have managed talent as the director of a model and talent agency in Orlando and Los Angeles, facilitated corporate
partnerships for AFI FEST, and volunteered with civil rights organizations.
My exposure to a variety of business functions makes me well-suited to assist
small businesses with their legal challenges or risks.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Suffolk University in Boston in 2004.
I received my Juris Doctorate from Barry University School of Law in Orlando in 2012.
During law school, I studied international intellectual property law at University College Dublin
and received a Certificate in Entertainment Law from Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles.
I was the Vice President of the American Constitution Society chapter at Barry Law.
I am licensed to practice law in Washington State.

Aside from my love of all things entertainment and law, I love to travel.
I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and lived in Boston, Orlando, and Los Angeles.
My current second home is in Dingle, Ireland, where I've spent time this
past year getting to know and love the town and its people, and particularly
its  traditions and artistic community.

Above all, I cherish loyalty, open communication and integrity.  I always keep these traits in the
forefront of a business relationship, holding myself and others to high standards.
